Kids + Mentors + Low-Tech Tools: Developing a Makerspace culture
"'Doing hands-on things you can’t do at home or anywhere else.' 'It’s not like school.' 'Creative projects.' That’s how our students describe Michigan Makers, our weekly after-school makerspace project. Created by University of Michigan faculty, graduate students, and alumni, we are excited at how low-cost electronics -- like $25 Arduino microcontrollers and $35 Raspberry Pi Linux computers -- make computer-based tinkering affordable for all. Our project explores how and what participants learn when we bring low-hierarchy, “tinker thinking” into the after-school setting. With an emphasis on social learning, we aim to encourage students to “fry the Pi” – to tweak, hack, experiment, and explore. We’ll report on our thinking, planning, and early implementation."
